One of the Mitchell District High School (MDHS) girls curling teams captured the Perth championship at the high school bonspiel in Stratford (Feb. 14-15) and earned the right to move on to the Huron–Perth bonspiel (Feb. 26) to determine which team will advance to the WOSSAA championships.
Kelly Ward, Aisha Montano Guitierrez, Bree Belfour and Myah Vingerhoeds, with assistance from spare Randi Shuker, won the Perth girls title but dropped a tough final by one point in an extra end to Listowel for the Huron-Perth crown. Both Perth teams won crossover games with Huron to meet up in the final.
MDHS actually sent three teams to the Perth bonspiel, all doing well in the double-knockout event. In total, there were seven girls and seven boys high school teams entered. Mitchell’s girls team ‘B’ placed third, as did the MDHS boys team.
In fact, of the 10 curlers on the two 2017-18 Perth County championship teams, there is a Mitchell Curling Club connection as seven of these young curlers played their first curling games as juniors in the Mitchell & District Arena – the four MDHS girls, as well as three of the St. Mike’s boys ‘A’ team: Michael Visser, Kevin Rops and Kurt Visser. That same St. Mike’s foursome went on to win bronze over another team from St. Mike’s at the Huron-Perth bonspiel. South Huron, from Exeter, won H-P gold.
